INDORIDER GUIDE TO SAFE SURFING
Most surfing accidents are avoidable. Here is a list of things to watch out for. If somebody does make a mistake please don't shout, it helps nobody. The line up is a peaceful place and shopuld remain that way.
Key Points of the Surfer’s Code (Surf Etiquette):
- Right of Way (Priority Rule)
- The surfer closest to the peak of the wave has the right of way.
- Don’t drop in (take off in front of someone already riding the wave).
- Don’t Snake
- Don’t paddle around someone repeatedly to get inside position. This is called "snaking" and it’s disrespectful.
- Don’t Drop In
- Never take off on a wave when someone is already riding it. This is called "dropping in" and can cause collisions.
- Paddle Wide, Not Through the Lineup
- When paddling out, avoid the path where people are riding waves (the impact zone). Paddle wide around the break.
- Hold Onto Your Board
- Try not to ditch your board, especially in crowded areas. Boards can hurt others if let loose.
- Communicate
- Use clear signals or words (e.g., "Left!" or "Right!") when sharing peaks or to avoid collisions.
- Don’t Hog Waves
- Even if you’re skilled, don’t take every wave. Share with others, especially in crowded lineups.
- Respect the Locals
- Be humble, especially at spots where you’re a visitor. Observe how locals surf and act.
- Help Others
- If someone is in trouble, offer help. Surf communities are built on respect and safety.
- Respect the Environment
- Don’t litter, don’t damage reefs or dunes, and be mindful of marine life (use eco wax if possible, such as INDORIDER BEES SURF WAX.
