NOAA's Climate Prediction Center now puts the odds of a very strong El Niño this winter above 90%, with a real chance — over two-thirds by their own numbers — that this becomes the strongest El Niño event ever recorded, surpassing even the legendary 1997-98 season that shut down the North Shore and forced the first-ever "Condition Black" beach closure in Hawaii.
El Niño doesn't make surf "better" or "worse" globally — it redistributes it, rearranging storm tracks, wind patterns, and swell production around the whole Pacific and beyond. Here's how it's shaping up by region.
North Pacific: The Big Winner
California and Hawaii stand to benefit the most. Strong El Niño years historically supercharge the North Pacific storm track, sending more frequent and more powerful swells toward the West Coast and the islands, typically arriving from a more westerly angle than usual. Surfers point to 2015-16 and 1997-98 as the reference points for what a strong event can deliver. If this year lives up to the "historic" label being used, expect a winter that gets talked about for years.
The Americas
Peru and the South American Pacific coast tend to ride the same amplified storm activity that lights up California and Hawaii during strong events.
Mexico and Central America can also see a bump — El Niño years favor more East Pacific tropical storm development, which is a double-edged sword (hazard as much as swell source) but can mean more tropical-driven surf for the region.
Indonesia and Australia: The Quiet Side
Indonesia typically draws the short straw. The same pattern that pumps up the North Pacific brings high pressure and strengthened, less favorable trade winds to the archipelago — easterly for Bali, southerly for the Mentawais — narrowing the swell window and generally producing drier, more inconsistent conditions than a neutral or La Niña season.
Australia sees a milder version of the same story. El Niño has less grip on the Australian surf climate than La Niña does, but when it shows up, it tends to mean reduced swell and more onshore wind days, particularly across the eastern and northern coasts.
The South Pacific Wildcard
Fiji and Tahiti buck the regional trend somewhat. Data from past strong events shows swell production in these islands can spike in the months leading into an event's peak — even while Indonesia goes quiet.
Europe and the Atlantic
El Niño tends to suppress Atlantic tropical storm development, meaning smaller surf across the Caribbean, US East Coast, and into Europe compared to a typical or La Niña season — the inverse of what's happening in the Pacific.
The Wildcard: How Strong Is "Strong"
Every El Niño is different, and this one's strength is the real headline. NOAA's forecast has been revised upward repeatedly through 2026 — from a 63% chance of "very strong" in June to over 90% by mid-August. The bigger the anomaly, the more exaggerated all of the above effects tend to be. A moderate event nudges the dial; a historic one, which current models are pointing toward, can rewrite an entire season. Peak impacts are expected to land January through March 2027.
No two El Niños play out identically, and long-range surf forecasting is still forecasting — treat this as the way the odds are leaning, not a guarantee.
